STD stats
hey bible belt, looks like that abstinence only education is workin out real well for you down there.
My Virginia sex ed program taught me nothing about STIs, except that there’s one that would make it burn when I pee, and that if I didn’t go to the doctor immediately, I would need to get a new urethra drilled. SERIOUSLY.
In my Virginia sex ed program [in middle school years ago] we basically memorized the location of the parts of the reproductive systems, had a test, talked about ABSTINENCE, and then told a list of STDs and then tested again.
Because overall that was SOOOO useful.
I actually had the opposite experience with my VA sex ed program in Middle school and High school. I’m also from a much more religious area(SW VA). We were taught about abstinence, but we also had to go through the signs and symptoms(with pictures) of all the STDs, watch videos on AIDS and cervical/testicular cancers.

Because you are aware that you are using incorrect grammar or spelling, but you just don’t care. Apathy is the enemy of mankind. You don’t care about how stupid it makes you look, you don’t care that you are perpetuating that…
To jump onto this bandwagon(and since I’m on a linguistic high still from finishing my linguistics class Monday), I really like all these responses. The thing that really made me angry from the first post was saying that people speak in a non standard way because they don’t care. Um, what? I speak in my non standard dialect because I care deeply about it - it is my cultural heritage, and has been since the late 1600’s when the first generations on both sides of my family came here and settled in Southwest VA(around the 1750s). It is my dialect, and it is not incorrect to speak it. Tell that to my grandfather, who says things like “ain’t, yellah, hollah, y’all” and has a very wonderful Virginia accent. Oh, what’s that? You think he sounds stupid because he talks that way? He has a PhD, graduated with a 4.0 from VT in Undergrad, Masters, and doctorate level. He spent his entire life teaching other people agriculture so that you can eat the food you get at the grocery store. My grandmother spoke the same way, she had a masters in education with a 4.0 from Radford and VT at undergrad and masters levels. Without her deciding to teach as well, the teacher who convinced me to come to WM and study anthro wouldn’t have been a teacher, who also has a non standard dialect. Don’t underestimate people who don’t “speak properly”, you probably don’t speak 100% standard English either.
